Suomen oppihistoriallinen seura on kutsunut säännöllisesti arvovaltaisia ulkomaisia esitelmöitsijöitä pitämään Jaakko Suolahti-luentoja, jotka perustettiin ensimmäisen puheenjohtajan muistoksi vuonna 1988.

Yhdeksäs Jaakko Suolahti-luento pidetään 26. 1. 2023 klo 17.00-18.00 Tieteiden talolla. Luennon pitää Johan Östling, Pohjoismaiden johtava tiedon historian asiantuntija. Östling toimii professorina Lundin yliopistossa sekä Lund Centre for the History of Knowledge’n johtajana.

Approaches to the History of Knowledge: Arenas, Actors and Circulation

In this presentation, Östling starts off by introducing the new field of the history of knowledge. He discusses its main historiographical varieties and presents some of its key concepts – in particular actors, arenas and circulation of knowledge. Drawing on his own research, he demonstrates how a study of the conditions of the circulation of knowledge could look like. He thereby focuses on the public sphere during the 1960s and 1970s, highlighting certain media platforms where circulation of knowledge occurred, such as newspapers, paperback series and early television. His research underlines the importance of the humanities for a kind of public knowledge during these years, thereby challenging a crisis narrative of the humanities of the postwar period that is prevalent in established historiography.

Johan Östling is Professor of History, Director of the Lund Centre for the History of Knowledge (LUCK), and Wallenberg Academy Fellow at Lund University. His research is mainly devoted to the history of knowledge, but he has a more general interest in the intellectual, political, and cultural history of modern and contemporary Europe. His recent publications comprise Circulation of Knowledge (2018), Forms of Knowledge (2020), Histories of Knowledge in Postwar Scandinavia (2020), and Humanister i offentligheten (2022). Östling is also the editor-in-chief of the international yearbook History of Intellectual Culture (De Gruyter).

VII Jaakko Suolahti-luento pidettin Yliopistomuseon luentosalissa Arppeanumissa 22.1.2009 Professori Helge Kragh Aarhusin yliopistosta luennoi aiheesta ”History of Science and the History of Nature”.

VI Jaakko Suolahti-luento pidettiin Yliopistomuseon historiallisessa luentosalissa Arppeanumissa 15.1.2004 Luennon piti professori Brigitte Hoppe Münchenin Ludwig-Maximilian-yliopiston tieteenhistorian laitokselta, aiheena ”Ideas of Physiognomy in Biological Sciences”.

V Jaakko Suolahti-luento pidettiin 18.1.2001. Professori Rahul Peter Das Hallen yliopistosta puhui Tieteiden talossa aiheesta ”The classical Âyurvedic Representation of Human Anatomy”.

IV Jaakko Suolahti-luento pidettiin 15.1.1998. Professori Liliane Bodson Liègen yliopistosta Belgiasta puhui Tieteiden talossa järjestetyssä tilaisuudessa aiheesta ”In search of Roman Zoology: Pliny the Elder on Animals”.

III Kolmannen Jaakko Suolahti -luennon piti 18.1.1994 Helsingin yliopiston Porthaniassa Upsalan yliopiston tieteenhistorian professori Tore Frängsmyr aiheesta ”Den gudomliga ekonomin: Om handel och vetenskap under 1700-talet”.

II Järjestyksessä toisen Jaakko Suolahti -luennon piti 18.1.1991 Firenzen tieteenhistorian museon johtaja prof. Paolo Galluzzi aiheenaan Leonardo da Vinci.

I Ensimmäinen Jaakko Suolahti -luento järjestettiin 18.1.1988 Helsingin yliopiston pienessä juhlasalissa. Tieteenhistorian kansainvälisen akatemian entinen presidentti, professori Mirko D. Grmek (Sorbonne) puhui aiheesta ”Ideas on heredity in Greek and Roman Antiquity”. Katso Grmek, ”Antiikki ja perinnöllisyys”, Hippokrates. Jaakko Wilhelm Suolahti (18. 1. 1918-27. 1. 1987) var en finländsk antikforskare. Han var specialiserad på Roms socialhistoria och var docent i allmän historia vid Helsingfors universitet 1955-1960 och professor 1960-1981 samt docent vid Tammerfors universitet sedan 1971. Han verkade som direktör för Finlands Rom-institut, Villa Lante, åren 1962-1965. Jaakko Suolahti var också första ordförande för Finlands lärdomshistoriska samfund.

Finlands lärdomshistoriska samfund har regelbundet bjudit in prominenta utländska föreläsare att hålla Jaakko Suolahti-föreläsningar.

Den nionde Jaakko Suolahti-föreläsningen hålls 26. 1. 2023 i Vetenskapernas Hus. Föreläsare är Johan Östling, ledande sakkunnig i kunskapshistoria i Norden. Östling är professor vid Lunds universitet och ledare för Lund Centre for the History of Knowledge.

The Finnish Society for the History of Science and Learning has invited distinguished foreign guests to give Jaakko Suolahti-lectures. Jaakko Suolahti (1918-1987) was the first chairman of the Society and remarkable scholar in Finnish Classical studies. He was specialized in Roman social history and acted in University of Helsinki as an Adjunct Professor in 1955-1960 and as a Professor 1960-1981, as well as acting as an Adjunct Professor in University of Tampere 1973-1987. He was also a director of Villa Lante, the Finnish Institute of Rome 1962-1965.

The IX. Jaakko Suolahti-lecture will be given by Johan Östling in 26. 1. 2023. Östling is a leading Nordic historian on knowledge and act as a Professor in University of Lund, as well as acting as a director of Lund Centre for the History of Knowledge.
